Club History


1762

HCC earliest mention was taken from the Cricket quarterly 1763 page 85, which states that a match was arranged for Thursday 29th July 1762 on Hailsham Common between Hailsham, Hurstmonceux and Wartling versus Arlington, Chalvington Ripe and Ringmer. The match would commence at noon for half a guinea a man.

1871

The following comes from the 1st issue of the James Lilywhite annual 1872 and lists Hailsham for the year 1871 as having played 12 matches winning 6 and losing 6. Their colours were blue and white the nearest railway station was Hailsham 250yds away. The Secretary was A. Burtenshaw, and the club had 44 members.

1884

Hailsham Cricket Club was re established in June 1884 after a lapse of a few years. In 1884 there were two minute books, one for rules, fixtures committee meetings, and the other for general meetings held twice a year.

The committee were to purchase a large roller from Mr. Hastings for as little as possible, no record of the cost was mentioned, but rumours are from old players that it cost £3/-/- and was 2nd hand even then and it came from Mayfield. The same roller is the one still used in wicket preparation today 122 years on. A new pavilion was also proposed at this meeting.

A match was arranged between the ladies and men, the men were to bat and bowl with a broomstick.

The inaugural cricket week was a big success, 6d entrance was charged

HCC were planning to have a new pavilion, a bank account was to be opened with Barclays for this purpose

New sightscreens purchased from Burfields 36x9feet at a cost of £3/4s

The committee proposed a cricket tour of Belgium at a cost of £5/-/- during the 1913 season. Records of that tour are in the clubs files

HCC held a committee meeting at the Hailsham Memorial Institute this was the first at the HMI which had just opened and became the headquarters for the cricket club

At a meeting held in the HMI the club adopted the colours of light blue dark blue and chocolate, blazers would be 45/- caps 5/6 silk ties 4/9 and silk scarves 13/6

Owing to international affairs (WWII) it had become difficult to raise two elevens

Henry Crocombe represents Sussex CCC U12's and Daisy Bean becomes the first lady to play for Hailsham in league cricket.

All four Hailsham CC senior league teams win on the same weekend for the first time.

Two Hailsham CC junior teams win their leagues for the first time since the re introduction of the junior section. U9's won 7 from 7 and the U12's won 6 from 6.

Hailsham CC 1st XI win division 3 with a last week victory over Forest Row.

Hailsham CC secure the lease of Roebuck Park, as a second ground for the club, to be used by the 3rd/4th XI's. This is a new purpose built cricket pitch on the site of the old Hellingly Hospital ground.

Hailsham officially launches a ladies hardball cricket team for the 2020 season.

COVID 19 sends the country into lockdown and the league season cancelled. We end up playing friendlies in July & September and the league organised a cup competition during August.
